Kevin Nottingham

Infrastructure, automation, virtualization, security, AI, and the endless noble battle against computer nonsense.

I’m a Florida-based systems engineer with over 25 years of experience across Linux and Windows environments, enterprise IT operations, virtualization, patch management, security/compliance, and modern homelab infrastructure. I enjoy building reliable systems, solving technical puzzles, and using automation and AI to make complex environments more efficient, observable, and resilient.

Experience

My background includes Linux administration, Windows operating systems, VMware virtualization, patch management, endpoint and server maintenance, monitoring, troubleshooting, and security/compliance work in enterprise environments.

I also have hands-on experience with home automation, self-hosted services, remote access architecture, and practical AI workflows for research, automation, and assistant-style use cases.

Interests

Beyond work, I’m into travel, great food, music, TV, and building practical projects that blend technology, automation, and everyday life.

I like systems that are useful, elegant, and just a little bit over-engineered in the fun way.

Featured Project: Personal Homelab

My personal homelab is an evolving environment for experimenting with virtualization, Docker services, secure remote access, monitoring, media infrastructure, automation, and self-hosted tools. It gives me a place to test ideas, sharpen skills, and keep current with modern infrastructure practices without turning my day job into a second day job wearing a fake nametag.

The lab supports media services, dashboards, alerting, network visibility, remote access, and service health monitoring. It’s both a playground and a proving ground: part learning environment, part production-ish ecosystem.

Virtualization & Core Systems VMware Workstation, Rocky Linux, Windows hosts, service separation, storage planning
Containers & Apps Docker Compose, Plex ecosystem, media stack, utility services, dashboards
Monitoring & Reliability Uptime Kuma, Netdata, health checks, service visibility, notifications, troubleshooting
Remote Access & Security Tailscale, Cloudflare tunnel, access control, reduced exposure, layered monitoring
Home Automation Home Assistant exploration, network/device visibility, automations, practical integrations
AI Exploration Local assistant ideas, privacy-first workflows, automation, memory, voice, and self-hosted experiments
